I currently desperately want a tattoo. Now that’s a sentence I never thought would come out of my mouth. Ever. I’m terrified of needles. So terrified that I’ve never even remotely considered the possibility of getting a tattoo before. As soon as I found out that tattooing involved needles, I was like “nope, never getting one of those thanks.” I would’ve thought you were making a joke if you had told me that later on, I’d be seriously considering getting a tattoo myself.
But then, about a month ago, I came across this eating disorder recovery tattoo on Pinterest. It was really beautiful. It was a white ink lotus flower, but instead of a standard stem, the NEDA symbol was used in its’ place. And something about it really touched me- I loved the simplistic beauty of it. I loved how much hidden meaning it carried.
After doing some more research into tattoos, I decided that white ink was not for me. Apparently, in order to get white ink to work, the needle has to go deeper into the skin. And considering that I haven’t magically lost my fear of needles, that was enough to make me nix that idea.
I thought that would be it- if I couldn’t get the tattoo in white ink, then I didn’t want it. Wrong. I still want it. Even in black ink. I want a tiny little NEDA lotus flower on my ribs.
Ribs. That’s the other problem. Apparently getting a tattoo on your ribs is one of the most painful places. Have I completely lost it? Probably.
But I don’t want it somewhere extremely visible. I don’t want it somewhere where it’ll encourage a ton of questions. I want it somewhere just for me. For me to share the information if I choose. But mostly to remind me of how much I’ve come through. And to keep going.
